At a Loss for Words…
Well, not quite.
The new Netflix “homepage” seems nice. It’s a tad cumbersome, but I like the way it groups films by category. And I like the way it offers recommendations. Or at least I like it in theory.
This is what I got when I logged on today:

OK, those two films have nothing in common. Actually, make that “less than nothing.” I have no idea what sort of algorithm they’re using to come up with these recommendations, but it’s not working. The chances are very good that everyone who has seen and enjoyed Ushpizin will hate My Scene Goes Hollywood: The Movie.
Still reeling…

Kind of neat to be alive from the time a new medium (Internet) was created and so see the seminal moments in its development. Amazon created the overwhelmingly best shopping site and everyone else has to follow.
By the way, in the body of your post, “The changes are very good” should probably be “The chances are very good”.
A couple of holes in your logic, too. There are four possible groups:
(1) Those who have neither seen nor enjoyed Ushpizin;
(2) Those who have seen but not enjoyed Ushpizin;
(3) Those who have enjoyed but not seen Ushpizin;
(4) Those who have both seen and enjoyed Ushpizin.
As you say, group (4) will probably hate My Scene Goes Hollywood. Group (1) is irrelevant for your analysis, because the Netflix recommendation connected Ushpizin with My Scene Goes Hollywood, so those who lack Ushpizin do not count. And I take it that you would mark group (2) as containing those who like My Space Goes Hollywood.
But you left out group (3), which is where I would fall. I have never seen the movie, but I enjoy it tremendously simply in virtue of its name. Perhaps a survey will be required to determine whether members of group (3) in general like or dislike My Scene Goes Hollywood.
For the record, I have never watched My Scene Goes Hollywood, but I hate it simply in virtue of its name.
Typo in the above: “but the Netflix recommendation” should be “because the Netflix recommendation”.
Fixed both typos. Nice catch(es).
I find myself wondering if there is anyone in Group #2, either. Or at least anyone with a soul…
I own the film. We’ll have a viewing shortly after your arrival. You will move smoothly from #3 to #4, I have no doubt.
Yesterday I watched The Third Man. It is not like most movies I have seen, because (a) it directly defies various movie “requirements” such as “Do not mention God” and “Man must get girl”, and (b) the main point of the movie was not banged upon and made blatant but left to come through details of gesture and facial expression. Very difficult for a pulp fiction watcher like me.
This is really a nice blog,i always come here and read the articles
