Gilliam’s Latest Revival

Director Terry Gilliam has always STOOD out to me as “a third of the greatest failed match-up of director, star and material ever.”  (For more depressing details, watch Lost in La Mancha.)

Only perhaps it’s not quite as depressing as I’d THOUGHT.

One hurdle the film will need to cross is getting Johnny Depp back on board. Since the project first dissolved, Depp has signed on to make The Lone Ranger and a fourth Pirates of the
Caribbean movie, an eventuality that Gilliam will work around.

”When Johnny’s ready, we’re ready. We’re just talking about dates to film. Basically it all depends on his schedule but otherwise we’re set.”

Sounds like there are still a fair number of obstacles, but the fact that it’s back on the table is great news.  Gilliam’s vision was impressive when he first made the attempt, and it’s probably only “gotten better with age.”

Saxby Wins!

I’m thinking that Chambliss probably wins the “Best First Name for a Senator” contest easily.  I should probably do a bit more research, but it looks pretty safe at the moment.

And I know he WINS the “Most Recently Confirmed Senator” contest hands-down.  Sort of like he won his run-off hands-down.

He CREDITS Palin, mostly.

Fresh off his runoff victory Tuesday night, Georgia Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss credited Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin with firing up his base.

“I can’t overstate the impact she had down here,” Chambliss said during an interview Wednesday morning on Fox News.

“When she walks in a room, folks just explode,” he added. “And they really did pack the house everywhere we went. She’s a dynamic lady, a great administrator, and I think she’s got a great future in the Republican Party.”

Definitely going to be an interesting couple of years in the Palin household.

Jim Geraghty MAKES a very interesting point:

As Ruffini and Dayton point out, when Obama was on the ballot in November, Democrat Jim Martin was within three. Obama was worth 11 percentage points? Soren Dayton concludes, “when the Democrats try to push through outrageous things like card-check, significant tax-increases, etc., all we need to do is point to tonight. When progressives were on the ballot, not just a celebrity, the progressives were roundly rejected.”

On the whole, that seems right.  There are probably a number of other factors that might have impacted the final result a bit, but the “No Obama Around” sure had a significant impact.  (Chambliss admits to being unsure why the President-To-Be didn’t “Pull A Palin,” and help Martin more.  Perhaps it’s because Obama knew it was doomed.)
